Parents, be careful
I wanted to share my story with you all so that no one else falls victim to anything like this. Please share this message widely so that it raises awareness... it could save a life!
A week ago, on a cold Sunday afternoon, my husband and I took our 4 and a half month old son over to a friends house. While there, I noticed that he kept dropping his head, as if to fall asleep on everyone who held him-almost like he couldn’t hold the weight of his head anymore. Thinking nothing of it, we went about our day as usual, only to witness him doing it over and over again.
By the evening, we were officially worried, and having caught it on photo and video, sent it over to our pediatrician who said that it wasn’t normal and that she wanted to see him the following day.
We took him in the following morning, and she expressed concern, especially given that his head had grown exponentially in comparison to his body. He also seemed sleepier than usual, which, combined with the head dropping, seemed to point to some sort of neurological issue. We thereafter took him for an ultrasound of the head, to check for any fluid or lesions in or around the brain and it was clear. However, the head dropping continued over the next couple of days, and baffled by this behavior, coupled with the sleepiness, the doctor thought it best we see a pediatric neurologist, just to rule out any possible issues with his brain. Terrified, I made the appointment for that Thursday.
Fast forward to Thursday evening... at around 6:00pm, my dad calls me up in a huff and asks where my son is. I tell him hes with me. He says hes found out whats wrong with him so of course I ask “what”? He tells me that one of his staff, who was a good friend of my nanny’s, has come forward and told him that my nanny has been giving my son anti histamine tablets in an attempt to sedate him in order to “make her work easier”. In shock and disbelief, I call my nannies friend directly, and she confirms what my dad has just told me. She explains that it’s been going on for a while and that my nanny would suck on the piriton tablet and then give it to him when soft. And this was a daily occurrence.
We were totally numb. We had trusted our nanny with our most prized possession. We had treated her like family. Everyone who met her told us how lucky we were to have such an awesome nanny. Would she really do such a thing to an innocent, unsuspecting baby?! We decided to confront her, so we asked her in and told her the doctors report was back, and they’d found high doses of piriton in his blood. I asked if she had given him any such thing and she denied it. However, her tone dropped, as did her expression, and it was easy to see she was lying. Needless to say, we had to let her go the following day.
We suspect she had been doing this to our son for atleast 6 weeks because it was then that we noticed a sudden change in his personality. Our happy, bubbly boy, turned into an unresponsive, vacant little boy. He wouldn’t laugh as he did before, nor would he react to our attempts to make him happy.
We are extremely grateful that we found out in time, because it could have proved to be fatal had we not. There will be no long term effects on our poor little baby, and after examining him, the doctor is sure that he is going to be ok.
