Let's talk health: snake bite, envenomation
Many schools of thoughts are present with snake bite management, some are heresay passed on to generations by story tellings, others having factual basis, of research.
Let's ask, in case of a snake bite on firstly The head, secondly The Neck, Thirdly the Back, and at worst on the tip of the male genital organ while excusing himself from bush,
What is recommended for you to do ?
Tying below, or above wound?
Immobilizing the affected area?
Cutting around wound?
Sucking out blood with mouth from wound?
Applying a magical "black stone" on wound ?
Taking milk? Etc name them.
Who deserves an antivenom,?
Worldwide, only about 15% of the more than 3000 species of snakes are considered dangerous to humans.
In East Africa there are about 200 species of snake. Most of them are harmless or very rare. Basically there are 6 poisonous snakes in Uganda that can be fatal.
Namely;
A. Ssalambwa; 1. puff adders, 2. Gaboon vipers. Only reptiles which deliver like mammals.
B. Ttema nkima; 3. Jameson's mamba 4. Black Mamba. Able to raise their heads high.
C. Nswera; 5. Forest Cobra 6. Black neck spitting Cobra.
NB Nawandagala; green stick snake is non poisonus.
Some venomous snakes are cytotoxic, others neurotoxic, and rest hemolytic.
A triangular-shaped head, nostril pits (heat-sensing organs), elliptical pupils, and subcaudal(underneath) scales/plates arranged in a single row are characteristic features of a poisonus snake,
A non poisonus snake pupils are round, head is round shape and their subcaudal scales are arranged in double rows.
